Morocco imported 58,500 tons of wheat from Russia last week shipped from the port of Novorossiysk, local media reported.
During the same period, total wheat shipments from Novorossiysk reached 364.1 thousand tons. Among the total, 64.8 thousand tons were destined for the United Arab Emirates and 56.2 thousand tons for Tanzania.
Morocco’s grain production has suffered due to ongoing drought conditions, necessitating increased imports, especially of soft wheat. Forecasts suggest this season’s harvest will not exceed 33 million quintals, falling short of national demand.
In the first half of 2024, Morocco imported over 200,000 tons of cereals, predominantly wheat, from Russia. This move underscores Morocco’s proactive measures to address potential food shortages amidst global market uncertainties.
