US Ambassador to Algeria Elizabeth Moore Aubin on Thursday said that the US recognition of the Moroccan Sahara is a “historical fact.”
During an interview with Algerian media La Patrie News, Aubin emphasized that President Biden did not alter the 2020 proclamation by former President Donald Trump, which recognized Morocco’s sovereignty in its southern regions.
“President Biden did not change the proclamation because it is a historical fact,” Aubin insisted. “The administration’s stance is grounded in historical context and supports the ongoing efforts of the United Nations to find a sustainable solution for the Sahrawi people.”
Since assuming office, President Joe Biden has been largely silent on the Moroccan Sahara issue, prompting speculations that his administration is not in support of his predecessor’s decision to support Morocco.
Trump’s 2020 proclamation marked a pivotal point in Morocco’s efforts to safeguard its territorial integrity. Since then, the country continued to garner international support, with Spain joining the US in recognizing Morocco’s stance on the Sahara issue in 2022.
Aubin, who has been stationed in Algiers since February 2022, emphasized that the US will continue to support the UN political process in the region. “Our focus remains on supporting the UN’s efforts and working towards a resolution that is acceptable to all parties involved.”
