Morocco’s Government Council gave the green light to amend the decree that originally established Morocco’s National Press Grand Prize, approving a draft decree presented by Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid at a Council meeting on Thursday, in Rabat.
Draft decree No. 2.24.366 amends and supplements Decree No. 2.03.729 which was first promulgated back in 2004 to create the National Press Grand Prize, Mustapha Baitas, the Government spokesperson, told the press at a briefing following the Council meeting.
The original prize acknowledges the contributions of Moroccan journalists across a range of media forms, including television, radio, newspapers, digital platforms, news agencies, and photography.
It also recognizes media professionals’ role in driving growth and advancement within the country’s media landscape, while upholding the highest standards of journalism.
The amendment’s twofold objective, while still in development, is to provide support and recognition for good journalists, both men and women, and encourage them to raise the visibility of the profession while also raising intellectual and cultural levels of awareness, according to Baitas.
Revamping the prize will “contribute to the promotion of creativity in the Kingdom,” he said.
