The Moroccan Association for the Support of Migrants in Vulnerable Situations announced on Wednesday that Morocco has temporarily reopened its land border with Algeria to receive six Moroccan citizens who had been serving prison time in Tlemcen, Algeria, but have now completed their prison sentences and are to return to Morocco.
The individuals are originally from Oujda, Kasbah Tadla, Taza, and Fes. The NGO has already contacted the released Moroccan citizens to provide necessary support.
While it is anticipated that these six Moroccans will be coming home soon, the NGO expressed concern about hundreds of other young Moroccans in administrative detention in Algeria awaiting deportation.
“We are also working to address the technical and procedural challenges that hinder the processes of release and repatriation,” the association said.
The NGO said it had contacted international organizations to address this issue and plans to “take international measures to ensure the rights of the citizens.”
“Despite the challenges stemming from the diplomatic relations between Morocco and Algeria, we hope that this step will mark the beginning of a genuine relaxation and the return of all detainees and those under arrest to their families,” the NGO added.
Morocco reopened its border temporarily two months ago under similar circumstances on May 22 when Algeria allowed 15 Moroccans to return home.
