The UN General Assembly granted a 75.35 Mln dollars budget for the MINURSO operations from July 2024 to June 2025, an increase of 9.1% from the prior fiscal year.
The financial allocation is divided into various components, reported APA, the Africa-specialized news outlet on Monday.
68.79 million dollars allocated for MINURSO’s day-to-day activities; around 5 Mln dollars for the peacekeeping support account; 872,000 dollars for the UN Logistics Base in Brindisi, Italy; and 686,000 dollars for the Regional Service Centre in Entebbe, Uganda.
The budget increase is partly justified by higher costs for military and police personnel, estimated at 7.525 Mln dollars, civilian personnel costs of 25.44 Mln dollars, and miscellaneous operating costs of 37.74 Mln dollars.
Last May, the UN Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) suggested a 9.1% increase in the MINURSO budget.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had previously urged for an increase in MINURSO’s funding in his annual reports on the Sahara issue.
