Guinea-Bissau’s Foreign Minister Carlos Pinto Pereira reiterated, on Tuesday in the southern city of Laayoune, his country’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region.
Speaking at a press briefing following his talks with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on the sidelines of the 3rd session of the Morocco-Guinea Bissau Joint Cooperation Commission, Guinea-Bissau’s head of diplomacy also reaffirmed his country’s support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, which he considers the only credible and realistic solution to settle this regional dispute.
Pereira welcomed the efforts of the United Nations as an exclusive framework to achieve a realistic, practical and lasting solution to the dispute over the Sahara.
Recalling the opening by the Republic of Guinea-Bissau of a Consulate General in Dakhla in October 2020, he underlined that his country’s position is in line with the momentum of international recognition of the kingdom’s territorial integrity, reflecting the strong strategic partnership between the two brotherly countries at the highest level.
Pereira also stressed that Morocco’s southern provinces are an important African “hub”, calling for using the experience of these provinces as a basis to devise a development policy for the continent.
Co-chaired by Bourita and Pereira, the 3rd session of the Morocco-Guinea Bissau Joint Cooperation Commission kicked off on Tuesday morning, with the aim of strengthening friendship and fraternity ties between Morocco and Guinea Bissau.
The meeting was attended by Ambassador, Director-general of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI), Mohamed Methqal, as well as representatives of several departments.
