Over the weekend, the port of Algeciras recorded a significant increase in the number of vehicles and passengers departing towards Tangier and Ceuta, according to “Campo de Gibraltar Siglo XXI” magazine.
The traffic surge also prompted the activation of additional pre-boarding measures at the Llano Amarillo terminal.
According to recent data from the Directorate General of Civil Protection and Emergencies, the Algeciras-Tangier-Med route has experienced a slight increase compared to last year. From the start of the Strait of Gibraltar Operation on June 13 to July 11, some 176,894 passengers and 54,669 vehicles were recorded, marking a 1.3% and 5.6% increase, respectively, over the same period in 2023.
However, the Tarifa-Tangier City route showed a 5.1% decline in passenger numbers and a 9.8% drop in vehicles compared to the previous year.
Over the past weekend, ferry operators responded to the rising demand by increasing the number of crossings, ensuring that travelers had a smooth and efficient journey.
Authorities have noted that the upcoming weekends could see peak travel times coincide with the third week of July and the start of August vacations. They have advised North African travelers to plan their journeys well in advance, purchasing tickets early to avoid overcrowding at the ports.
The 2024 Strait of Gibraltar Operation seeks to manage the arrival and departure of passengers and vehicles effectively, reducing wait times and ensuring optimal service from the involved ferry companies.
These measures aim to guarantee the safety of travelers and an efficient crossing experience throughout the entire operation period.
