Morocco has ranked Africa’s second in the 2024 ICT Development Index, which measures the level of development of the information and communication technology sector, reaffirming a prominent role in Africa’s digital development.
Despite a slight dip in ranking from the previous year, Morocco maintains a strong position as the second-ranked on the continent, scoring 86.8 points, surpassed only by Libya.
Morocco’s score points up significant advancements in digital connectivity, particularly highlighted by its robust infrastructure, including widespread fiber optics and 4G networks.
The North African country excels with a score of 91.7 in tangible connectivity, reflecting effective utilization of digital technologies among its populace.
Addressing the digital divide remains a priority, especially in rural and mountainous areas with limited high-speed internet access. The Moroccan government recently announced plans to connect 1,800 rural areas to the internet in the near future.
Looking ahead, Morocco aims to capitalize on emerging technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) to foster economic growth and improve public services. Initiatives include strategic investments in submarine cables to bolster international connectivity, crucial for facilitating global internet traffic.
