Despite rising Islamophobia and racism in the UK, 25 Muslims were elected to the House of Commons in the general election on July 4, according to Anadolu’s article published on Wednesday quoting “Muslim Network TV.”
Muslim MPs increased from 19 in 2019 to 25 in the most recent election, which saw the socialist Labour Party win and Keir Starmer become Prime Minister.
Among those elected, 18 are from the Labour Party, four are independents, two are from the Conservative Party and one is from the Liberal Democrats.
The support of Muslim voters in Gaza significantly influenced the election, with five independent candidates, including four Muslims, winning seats.
There are 3.4 million Muslims living in the country, and the election of Muslim MPs marks an important milestone in the British political landscape, reflecting the growing diversity and its impact on British politics.
The Labour win also marks a major shift for the UK, as it has been under conservative rule for the past 14 years.
