Morocco will celebrate the start of the Islamic New Year, the Hijri year, on Sunday, July 7, Morocco’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs announced on Saturday.
The first day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, will fall on Sunday, July 7, the ministry pointed out in a press release following the usual crescent moon sighting.
The Islamic New Year, Hijri year, is called after the Arabic term for migration, commemorating the Prophet Muhammad’s journey from Mecca to Medina, two sacred Muslim cities in what is now Saudi Arabia.
