More than 11,000 demonstrations were held in Morocco in 2023, notably protests in support of Palestine and teachers, and others against food and commodity price hikes, Morocco’s National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) said on Tuesday.
“The Council monitored 600 demonstrations out of a total of 11,086 protests and gatherings on the main street, protesting against price hikes and the war in Palestine, among other issues”, CNDH head, Amina Bouayach, pointed out at the presentation of the Council’s annual report for 2023.
She also cited teacher demonstrations against a new law that “excluded them from incentives and salary increases.”
As Morocco’s inflation rate rose to 6.1% in 2023, and the Kingdom faced stiff increases in the prices of raw materials, particularly in energy, some sectors protested and demanded salary raises.
The human rights head recommended the effective establishment of a national system to protect economic and social rights, particularly those related to minimum social security standards such as unemployment benefits, disability pensions, and workplace injury compensation.
