Spain’s Ministry of Defense has put up for bid a plan valued at around one million euros to upgrade the aerial beacon system and strategic satellite communications on the three Spanish-controlled islands in the Mediterranean claimed by Morocco, Vélez de la Gomera, Alhucemas, and the Chafarinas Islands, according to Spanish news outlet OK Diario.
Recently unveiled through the Spanish state procurement portal, the request for bid proposals indicates that the project involves a comprehensive modernization of critical aerial beacon equipment essential for pinpointing the enclaves to ensure safer air navigation around them.
The upgrade will include cutting-edge beacon technology and robust electrical power systems.
Detailed technical specifications outlined in the tender document highlight the installation of advanced beacon systems engineered to function reliably under adverse conditions. These technological upgrades will also enhance integration with Spain’s navigation and air traffic control systems, thereby facilitating more coordinated operational management in the region.
The project will also involve enhancements to the satellite communications system, valued at 600,000 euros, the news outlet reported.
The improvements focus specifically on the satellite nodes of the I3D network to enable rapid transmission of information between military units and command centers almost in real-time. The capability is expected to ensure swift communication of any incidents or threats to the authorities in Madrid to enable prompt decision-making.
