Spain has issued an intervention declaration in the case brought last year by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the applicability of the Genocide Convention in Gaza.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry has stated that the intervention is motivated by the country’s responsibility as a State party to the Genocide Convention and its firm commitment to international law.
The Spanish position aligns with other nations such as Colombia, Mexico, and Palestine. It is anticipated that several other countries, including Ireland, Belgium, and Chile, may also join the initiative.
On May 28, Spain, Norway, and Ireland officially recognized the State of Palestine and established full diplomatic relations.
As of Sunday, the ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in the loss of more than 37,877 lives and 86,969 injuries, with the majority of casualties being children and women. Over 10,000 individuals are missing and the area has been devastated by extensive destruction and famine, resulting in the deaths of dozens of children.
