Morocco, represented by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, and Germany, represented by Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze and Parliamentary State Secretary Stefan Wenzel, signed on Friday in Berlin a joint declaration establishing a cooperation agreement on climate and energy.
The agreement promotes cooperation on climate adaptation, renewable energy, and green hydrogen.
This partnership will facilitate closer collaboration between the two countries in the areas of green hydrogen industry development, electricity trading, decarbonization, climate adaptation, and talent development.
“Morocco has excellent conditions for producing electricity from wind and sun, with which it can cover the needs of its economy and, in future, also start exporting green hydrogen to Germany”, a statement by the German Federal Ministries for Economic Cooperation and Development and Economic Affairs and Climate Protection read.
Morocco and Germany have a long history of collaboration, particularly in the field of renewable energy. Germany played a pivotal role in building the world’s largest solar thermal power plant in Ouarzazate, which currently supplies electricity to approximately 1.3 million people.
The statement reiterated that Germany is currently engaged in the construction of the inaugural green hydrogen production plant in Morocco, scheduled for completion in the coming years.
The plant is projected to generate approximately 10,000 tons of hydrogen per year, sufficient to produce 50,000 tons of green steel.
The source also indicated that the project is meant to serve as a model for the profitability of green hydrogen production in Africa, as well as enhance private investor trust in the kingdom.
