Moroccan filmmaker Mohamed Abderrahmane Tazi was crowned “Best Director” at the 3rd Golden FEMI Film Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria, for his movie “Fatima the Unforgettable Sultana,” which won the festival’s “Grand Prix”.
Morocco’s Ambassador to Bulgaria, Zakia El Midaoui, who received the award on behalf of the director, expressed her gratitude to the organizers of this international film event and the members of the jury for this accolade
“The film chronicles the life of Fatima Mernissi, a sociologist, writer, researcher, and, most importantly, a prominent figure in Morocco’s feminist movement,” added the ambassador.
El Midaoui underscored King Mohammed VI’s commitment to the film industry, which aims to promote Morocco’s regional leadership and increase the competitiveness of the national film industry.
She recalled Morocco’s collaboration with many countries on various continents to develop cinema, citing the signing of several agreements during former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Gabriel’s visit to the Kingdom on January 10.
Nearly 5,000 films, in all categories combined, representing 130 countries, competed in the 2024 edition of the festival.
During the previous edition of the festival, Moroccan director Hamid Basket won the award for best direction of a feature film with a theme related to social issues, for his film “Butterflies Silence“.
