Morocco’s airports of Tangier Ibn Batouta, Fes Saiss, Agadir Al Massira, Oujda Angad and Nador El Aroui will be equipped with smart electronic gates “E-gates”, Morocco’s National Airports Office (ONDA) said.
These E-gates are automated systems that use biometrics technology to check the identity of travelers, so passengers can pass through without assistance, leading to expedited boarding and exiting processes at the airport.
The E-gates also capture a passenger’s facial image and compare it to the one stored in the passport chip, automatically opening if the identity is verified.
The verification process typically takes less than 15 seconds, providing a quick solution for passenger flow.
This technology is part of the global trend towards modernizing border controls that has already been adopted by many countries, especially in Europe.
ONDA partnered with Kuwaiti National Aviation Services Company in 2018 to install the first E-gates for the VIP lounge at Marrakech’s Menara Airport.
