Morocco Braces for Forest Fires Amid Anticipated Heatwave

An anticipated heatwave is raising concerns about the eruption of forest fires in several regions of Morocco on June 22-24, the National Agency for Waters and Forests (ANEF) warned.

After analyzing data relating in particular to forest types and their combustibility and flammability levels, as well as topo-climatic parameters, ANEF identified an extreme risk (red level) in the provinces of Tangier-Asilah, Fahs-Anjra, Nador, Taza, Khenifra, Larache, Taounate, Berkane, Al Haouz and Essaouira.

The Agency said the risk is particularly high (orange level) in the provinces of Tetouan, M’diq-Fnideq, Chefchaouen, Taroudant, Beni Mellal, Khemisset, Taourirt and Oujda-Angad.

It also identified a medium risk (yellow level) in the provinces of Al Hoceima, Kenitra, Sidi Slimane and Agadir-Ida-Outanane.

These forecasts coincide with the sweltering heat expected starting from June 22 following an orange alert weather bulletin issued by Morocco’s Meteorological Agency (DGM) saying that heat can reach 42 in some regions.
