Just Stop Oil (JSO) activists sprayed US pop star Taylor Swift’s private jet with orange paint on Thursday at Stansted Airport in Essex to protest against excessive fuel use amid climate change.
Two activists, Jennifer Kowalski, 28, a former sustainability manager from Dumbarton, and Cole Macdonald, 22, from Brighton, who broke into a private area of the Stansted airport and targeted the plane were detained, said Essex police.
JSO said on X that two activists had “cut the fence into the private airfield at Stansted where taylorswift13’s jet is parked, demanding an emergency treaty to end fossil fuels by 2030.”
British sustainability marketing agency “Yard” reported that her plane flew 170 times in 2022, resulting in total flight emissions of over 8,293 tons, around 1,184 times greater than the typical individual.
One day before the incident, JSO activists sprayed an orange substance on Stonehenge, the renowned prehistoric UNESCO world heritage site in southwest England. The group said Niamh Lynch, a 21-year-old student, and Rajan Naidu, 73, utilized “orange cornflour” to deface the ancient stones.
The activists claimed their actions aimed to “demand that Britain’s next government legally commit to phasing out fossil fuels by 2030.” Local Wiltshire police announced that the activists were detained.
