The Arab Parliament on Tuesday called for enhanced efforts to prevent hate speech, suggesting legislation to reduce this scourge.
On the occasion of the International Day Against Hate Speech, the Arab Parliament called on international organizations and legislative institutions to work together to devise laws that help limit the spread of this phenomenon, in line with the UN strategy to reduce and eliminate hate speech.
“The world has become so devastated that immediate action must be taken as soon as possible to curb hate speech”, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Adel bin Abdulrahman Al-Asoomi, said.
His statement refers to the UN Strategy as a global framework for tackling the causes and effects of this phenomenon in light of international human rights standards.
Al-Asoomi illustrated the importance of raising awareness of the dangers of hate speech in order to prevent and eliminate all its forms, through the implementation of educational and research programs and initiatives aimed at understanding and resolving the root causes of this phenomenon.
The Arab Parliament Speaker cautioned that hate speech is likely to instill fear and division, promote violence, aggravate tensions, and stymie efforts at mediation and conversation.
