Morocco has been re-elected for a second term to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CPRD) during the 17th Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, held on June 11-13, 2024, in New York.
Represented by Abdelmajid Makni, Morocco garnered 137 votes in the first round, emerging victorious among 15 candidates competing for nine available positions for the 2025-2028 term, the Moroccan Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a press release.
Morocco was re-elected to serve another term on the Human Rights Committee on May 29, 2024, and on the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights on April 6, 2024.
The kingdom’s re-election to the UN CPRD underscores the country’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of individuals with disabilities.
Makni is a former member of the National Human Rights Council with in-depth experience in promoting the rights of people with disabilities.
The UN CPRD is comprised of 18 independent experts and is in charge of overseeing the enforcement of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by States Parties and providing recommendations to enhance the implementation of its provisions.
