The UN Security Council voted to back a proposal outlined by President Joe Biden on Monday for a full ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, several news outlets reported.
The proposal also sets out conditions for the release of hostages held by Hamas, the return of the bodies of dead hostages, and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners.
14 out of 15 Security Council members voted in favor of the US-drafted resolution, while Russia abstained.
Israel accepted the ceasefire proposal, and Hamas said in a statement that it is ready to cooperate with mediators to implement the terms of the plan “that are consistent with the demands of the Palestinian people.”
The resolution voted upon details the proposal, spelling out that “if the negotiations take longer than six weeks for phase one, the ceasefire will still continue as long as negotiations continue.”
In March, the Security Council demanded an immediate ceasefire and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas.
