Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday ended the mission of Algeria’s Ambassador to Cairo Hassan Rabehi, who assumed his duties less than a week ago, according to converging reports.
The decision came just one day after Rabehi presented his credentials to Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry. The reason behind the abrupt termination remains unknown.
President Tebboune terminated Rabehi’s duties shortly after he arrived in Egypt, marking the fastest appointment and change witnessed in the Algerian diplomatic corps.
The ambassador was appointed at the beginning of April to succeed former Ambassador Abdelaziz Benali Cherif.
On April 12, the Algerian foreign ministry announced the approval of the Egyptian government to appoint Rabehi as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the Arab Republic of Egypt.
Rabehi was Algeria’s Minister of Communication in 2019 and Algeria’s ambassador to Beijing.
While awaiting the appointment of a new Algerian ambassador to Cairo, the Algerian embassy in Cairo has witnessed the rotation of five ambassadors since 2019, including Saleh Lajroui between August 2019 and February 2022, Abdel Hamid Chabeira from March 2022 to September 2023.
