Ikram El Hannaoui, a member of parliament representing the Progressive and Socialist Party (PPS), has voiced serious concern that suicides are rising in the northern province of Taounate, located about 209 kilometers from Rabat.
In a statement to Moroccan media 2M.ma, on Saturday, she urged regional stakeholders to take immediate action to address the danger.
“Despite suicide becoming a ‘real phenomenon,’” she said, “it has not received appropriate attention through study and analysis to shed light on the circumstances and variables that contribute to it.”
She outlined the various factors that contribute to the “complex problem,” including psychological, social, health, and spiritual considerations.
Calling for the establishment of more social, economic, and cultural programs, El Hannaoui said that implementing comprehensive healthcare services that encompass mental health, adopting more equitable public policies in territorial areas, and promoting fairness among different societal groups are all crucial to addressing the prevention of suicide.
Just last week, four suicides occurred in the Taounate region. The most recent was the suicide of a 40-year-old man who was found hanged in a roundabout in the Timdet community, according to 2M.
