An in-match altercation between Moroccan player Yasmin Mrabet and Congolese player Ruth Kipoyi has gained international and local media attention, following the friendly game on June 3 at the Municipal Stadium in Berkane between Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The Atlas Lionesses won 3-2, but the atmosphere became increasingly tense following the elimination of Congolese player Ruth Kipoyi for a dangerous tackle on Moroccan midfielder Najat Badri.
Kipoyi was immediately dismissed from the game leading to a confrontation between Kipoyi and Moroccan defender Zineb Redouani. Mrabet attempted to intervene as a mediator, but Kipoyi punched her in the face, causing her to fall to the ground.
The match was stopped for five minutes as officials and players attempted to restore order.
Mrabet, who also plays for Las Planas, has announced her intention to file a legal action against Kipoyi. She expressed her disappointment and condemned the violent behavior as unacceptable in modern women’s football.
“This violent behavior should not be accepted. During the competition, disagreements can occur, tensions are bound to build up, but some lines must never be crossed,” Mrabet said firmly. “The appropriate procedures are underway to report the past events and from now on I’m only looking forward,” she concluded on Instagram.
To try to resolve the matter, Kipoyi issued a public apology, expressing regret for her actions. “I lost my temper during a heated match and acted in a way that was below my standards. To Yasmin in particular, I extend my sincerest apologies. I hope you are well today and wish you nothing but the best for the future. I am sorry,” Kipoyi wrote on social media.
The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has not yet commented on the matter. However, the behavior of all players is expected to be further scrutinized as the legal and disciplinary processes unfold.
