Morocco’s Minister of Industry Ryad Mezzour and NUTI IVO Group’s CEO Fabrizio Nuti signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday in Rabat to enlarge the group’s leather manufacturing capacity in Morocco with a second modern tannery facility in the Kingdom, according to a news release issued by the Ministry.
The MoU, which is effective from 2025 to 2029, includes a 131.2 Mln MAD investment with an estimated annual sales of 300 Mln MAD.
Over 90% of these sales are projected to come from exports, and the initiative will create 265 direct jobs. According to the release, daily output is projected to be 11,500 skins, the majority of which are sourced locally.
Built around the concepts of circular economy and sustainability, the plant will use solar energy to satisfy some of the tannery’s energy demands, as well as implement waste treatment technologies to recycle waste such as fertilizer, compost, and gelatin.
Mezzour stated “The Moroccan tanning industry is a historic sector that is undergoing transition in response to environmental issues and needs. The NUTI IVO Group’s new contemporary tannery project is completely in line with this dynamic, as it will match the needs of target markets in terms of quality and environmental standards, allowing us to offer medium and top-of-the-line raw materials.”
The Italian NUTI IVO Group, a leather manufacturer that has been in Morocco since 2010, plans to double its output. Shihara, the group’s first tannery, is located in Marrakech’s Sidi Ghanem industrial zone and has revenues of more than 109.3 million dirhams in yearly sales, mostly from exports to Italy, China, and Thailand.
