Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with Wang Yi, the Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China, in Beijing today to discuss the current status of bilateral relations between the two countries, according to a statement issued by the Moroccan Foreign Affairs Ministry.
“Ongoing positive bilateral relations have developed since the beginning of the strategic partnership agreement signed by Morocco’s King Mohammed VI and China’s President Xi Jinping during the royal visit to Beijing in May 2016,” the press release stated.
The two ministers renewed their “unwavering and reciprocal support” for fundamental issues affecting the vital interests of the Kingdom of Morocco and the People’s Republic of China.
Both officials commended the robust collaboration and joint initiatives, underscoring their dedication to fortifying political, economic, and cultural ties.
The meeting allowed both parties to delve into the potential for economic and commercial exchanges and explore ways to encourage Chinese investment in the Kingdom.
The ministers discussed the surge of Chinese tourism in Morocco since the king’s decision to lift visa restrictions for Chinese citizens on June 1, 2016. The move has significantly enhanced cultural and human connections between the two nations.
Morocco’s Foreign Minister used the opportunity to highlight the country’s flagship initiatives in Africa, spearheaded by King Mohammed VI to enhance stability, security, and economic growth in African countries. Key projects include the Royal Atlantic Access initiative for landlocked Sahel countries and the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline project.
Yi commended King Mohammed VI for his leadership in maintaining stability and socio-economic development in the Kingdom. He lauded Morocco’s advancement of regional and international peace and security.
