Ghana’s national amputee football team won the 2024 African Amputee Football Cup of Nations (AAFCON) title on Monday, defeating Morocco 2-1 in the final at the Petrosport Stadium in Egypt’s capital, Cairo.
Morocco’s El Mustapha Hliouat was the first to score in the first half of the match, at minute 15. Mohamed Moubarak was the goal-scoring star for Ghana, netting the ball twice in the match (44th, 57th minutes).
The Atlas Lions had advanced to the final of the continental competition following a 6-2 victory over Nigeria in the semifinals. In the quarter-finals, they secured a 4-2 win against the host country, Egypt. In the group stage, Morocco’s national team performed remarkably, securing victories against Liberia (5-0) and Uganda (9-0).
A total of 13 teams, divided into four groups, participated in this year’s competition: Egypt, Nigeria, Burundi, Liberia, Morocco, Uganda, Ghana, Gambia, Algeria, Kenya, Angola, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone.
With its exemplary performance throughout the tournament, the Moroccan team has now secured a place at the next World Cup for amputees in 2026.
