Chariot Limited, a major player in Africa’s transitional energy sector, recently revealed a promising natural gas discovery at the OBA-1 drilling site, located near Larache in northern Morocco under its Loukos onshore license, according to a company news release issued on Tuesday.
Touting the “remarkable success of its current drilling campaign,” the company stated that its OBA-1 well had been drilled to a final depth of 901 meters, achieving the company’s “planned reservoir objectives.” Preliminary data have indicated the presence of reservoirs 200 meters wide at intervals of 70 meters and showing high resistivity, suggesting the presence of a waterless gas layer.
Chariot’s Technical Director Duncan Wallace said, “We will now integrate the comprehensive data we have obtained from both the RZK-1 and OBA-1 wells with recently reprocessed 3D seismic data to understand the resource potential of the Dartois area, to confirm the optimal future work program on the discovery and the impact on wider prospects across the Loukos license.”
“Our two first wells have both been successful in confirming our geological model for reservoir distribution and the presence of gas which bodes well for future exploration activity,” he added.
Chariot’s discovery could significantly impact the productivity of the Loukos license and Morocco’s energy industry.
The British company spudded the new OBA-1 well on the Dartois prospect a week ago as part of its Loukos onshore license.
The company holds a 75% operating interest in the project, with Morocco’s Office of Hydrocarbons and Mining (ONHYM) holding the remaining 25%.
