A man attacked eight people and injured one more with a knife in central China’s Hubei Province, according to a report from China’s news agency, citing local authorities.
The stabbing incident occurred on Thursday morning in Xiaogan City. The 53-year-old perpetrator, identified as Lu, has a history of mental illness and is currently in police custody while investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The news agency confirmed that the wounded victim suffered no life-threatening injuries.
In China, where private firearm ownership is prohibited, instances of violent crime are rare. However, there has been a recent increase in the number of stabbing incidents.
On Monday, a woman armed with a fruit knife killed two people and injured four others at a primary school. In a separate incident earlier this month, a man carried out a stabbing at a hospital in Yunnan Province, resulting in two deaths and 21 injuries.
