World Economic Forum (WEF) ranked Morocco 82nd out of 119 in the “Travel and Tourism Development Index 2024” (TTDI) slipping 12 positions since 2019, according to WEF’s latest report released on Tuesday.
Morocco’s score in the tourism sector decreased by 3.2% since 2019, the same period of the COVID-19 pandemic which negatively affected this vital sector.
In the MENA region (including Israel), Morocco came in 11th. The list was headed by the United Arab Emirates (18th worldwide) and Saudi Arabia (41st worldwide), while Israel came third in the MENA zone (48th worldwide), Qatar ranked 53rd, and Egypt placed fifth regionally (61st globally).
In Africa, Morocco is seventh, as South Africa leads the list after coming 55th worldwide, followed by Mauritius (57th), and then Botswana (75th), and Kenya (77th).
Worldwide, the U.S., Spain, and Japan remain the unwavering top three most visited countries since 2019, scoring 5.24, 5.18, and 5.09 points, respectively.
The index, developed by the WEF, evaluates and measures various factors and policies that promote the sustainable and resilient development of the travel and tourism sector.
The TTDI, introduced in 2022, comprises five dimensions, subdivided into 17 sub-categories and 102 indicators. It takes into account the country’s general environment (business climate, security, etc.), policies impacting the tourism sector, infrastructure (notably transport), and natural and cultural resources, as well as the sector’s environmental sustainability.
The TTDI’s data set consists primarily of statistical analyses from international organizations, with the majority of this information based on World Economic Forum data. This section covers composition and computation, indicator and country selection, indicator list and details, and index changes/comparisons.
