Morocco and Romania are celebrating the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties through the launch of two joint postage stamps by Barid Al-Maghrib and Romfilatelia, to celebrate historical ties and friendship between the sister nations, Morocco’s Postal Service announced on Tuesday.
Focusing on the folk art theme, this joint issue highlights the cultural convergence and rich intangible cultural heritage of the two nations.
The two stamps feature two painted works of art depicting traditional costumes and pottery from both nations, reflecting the authenticity of their respective heritages, said the press release.
On the Moroccan side, the postage stamp depicts the emblematic traditional garment of the Moroccan woman, the brocade caftan known as “Khrib,” the intricate, polychromatic relief motifs of which are very similar to those of embroidery.
This work also illustrates ceramics from Fez, an ancient city of art and one of the cradles of Moroccan pottery.
The other work, illustrating the Romanian side, showcases the traditional Vâlcea costume worn by women from certain regions of Romania, notes the Barid Al-Maghrib Group, which also indicated that this is one of the most refined and varied costumes–the basic composition of which is comprised of the white shirt known as the “zăvelca”–an impressive piece both decoratively and with regard to the copious amounts of hand-woven fabric required.
This work also illustrates the traditional ceramics of the town of Horezu, distinguished by the elegance and beauty of its forms.
This stamp issue is the latest in a series of joint issues with other countries, the most recent of which were issued in 2024 with the Sultanate of Oman, in 2022 with the Republic of Serbia, in 2021 with the Dominican Republic and the Republic of Tunisia respectively, and many other joint philatelic achievements, including the very first with the USA in 1987.
