Minister of National Education, Preschool, and Sports Chakib Benmoussa announced on Monday the launch of a digital learning platform for accelerating students’ learning in the Amazigh language, Tamazight, and to bolster efforts to promote its wider adoption.
In response to two oral questions at the Lower House regarding teaching the Amazigh language, Benmoussa said that the ministry implemented a series of practical measures to enhance instruction in the Amazigh language in Morocco’s education system.
The number of Amazigh language teachers has tripled from 200 in 2021 to 600 now, with the first group of pedagogical inspectors for primary education in the Amazigh language already undergoing training.
The Minister added that the Ministry initiated a comprehensive training program across Morocco last week, in which 4,400 teachers will be able to obtain a dual specialization.
Benmoussa also said that the Ministry is committed to ensuring the presence of at least one Amazigh teacher in every public school, seeking to cover 50% of all primary education facilities by 2026 and achieve widespread teaching of the language by 2030.
Regarding pedagogical developments, the Minister highlighted its collaboration with the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture to update the primary-level Amazigh language curriculum. Seven new school textbooks spanning all six years of primary education have been published, along with pedagogical guides and digital resources aligned with the curriculum.
Benmoussa noted that the Ministry is exploring the possibility of integrating the Amazigh language into private educational institutions in collaboration with the private sector. There are also plans to incorporate Tamazight into national, regional, and provincial competitions, as well as promoting Amazigh culture in artistic, cultural, and educational projects.
