British members of Parliament said during a meeting at the House of Commons that the Moroccan autonomy plan is “the best option” to settle the Sahara issue and ensure a prosperous future for the region.
Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski, spearheading the discussion, stated that many of the United Kingdom’s allies, such as Spain, France, the Netherlands, and Germany, acknowledge that the Moroccan autonomy plan is “the best option for the region’s future.”
He added that Morocco is a reliable, strategic partner, possessing all the requirements of modern democracy, and called for the establishment of robust trade, political, and security relations with it.
Kawczynski noted that Morocco is a “truly flourishing democracy,” based on the rule of law, and free speech with no restrictions or fear of persecution.
Conservative MP Liam Fox affirmed that “the autonomy plan is the sole possible solution and the key to achieving progress for the region’s inhabitants who yearn for security and stability.
Labour MP Fabian Hamilton considered that one of the most important factors in resolving any conflict is economic development and reducing the gap between the rich and the poor, a thing that Morocco is successfully undertaking in its southern provinces.
Labour MP and Shadow Cabinet member, Lyn Brown, stated that the current stalemate has harmed the region and the interests of North Africa, and stressed the pressing need for “creative solutions” to keep pushing forward with the conflict.
Conservative MP and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, David Rutley, highlighted the continuously-growing United Kingdom-Morocco partnership and closer cooperation.
He concluded by saying that the United Kingdom supports the United Nations’ efforts to find a political solution that is permanent and acceptable for both parties.
