Police in Tangier launched an investigation on Sunday into the alleged smuggling of 27.4 kg of cocaine found concealed in a container sailing from a Brazilian port to Greece that had docked in Tangier, according to a press release issued by the National Police (DGSN).
Preliminary investigations revealed that police and customs authorities stationed at Morocco’s Tanger Med Port received a tip-off from a member of the crew who was examining a container with a “suspicious” shipment originating from Brazil.
A thorough search conducted with the help of a K-9 canine search team, resulted in the confiscation of 25 packets of a white substance connected to a Global Positioning System (GPS).
The subsequent forensic tests carried out by a forensic investigator determined that it was cocaine and that the seized shipment weighed around 27,400 grams. The samples were sent to the Police National Forensic Laboratory to determine the level of concentration.
The Interpol office in Rabat, affiliated with the DGSN, has been assigned to initiate international collaboration procedures to identify the origin of the drug shipments and investigate others who may be connected to the smuggling operation.
