The NGO Reporters Sans Frontieres “Reporters Without Borders” (RSF) has unveiled its annual world press freedom index, placing Morocco 129th in 2024–up from 144th a year earlier–a fifteen-spot improvement according to its recently published report.
The Kingdom earned a raw score of 45.97 points, compared to 43.69 for last year.
In the MENA region, Morocco is fourth, right after Mauritania (33rd worldwide), Qatar (84th), and Tunisia, respectively.
In North Africa, Morocco is in second place after Tunisia. The Kingdom is ahead of Algeria (139th), Libya (143rd) and Egypt (170th).
The Middle East and North Africa region is perceived by the NGO as the region where press freedom is most muzzled.
On a worldwide basis, Mauritania leads the list, followed by Namibia (34th), Seychelles (37th), South Africa (38th), and Capo Verde (41st), which are on the top 5 listed of the continent. Morocco, incidentally, ranks number 38 on the continent for press freedom.
