A couple of days after the African Football Confederation (CAF) Cup’s second leg semifinal match between USM Alger and RS Berkane was called off, the CAF Interclub Competitions and Management of the Club Licensing System Committee delivered its verdict on Thursday, unsurprisingly sanctioning USM Alger, according to a press release by the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).
As anticipated, the CAF officially confirmed the default victory of the Moroccan team over the Algerian one because they failed to honor their fixture.
USMA refused to take on Berkane on Sunday due to their objection to the Moroccan team’s jerseys featuring the extended map of the Kingdom of Morocco encompassing the Sahara.
The committee also decided to refer the case to the Disciplinary Board for review for additional sanctions against the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), according to the statement.
The first leg between the two teams was not played for the same reason, resulting in a 3-0 victory for Morocco despite FAF’s appeals.
RSB will square off against the Egyptian team, Zamalek, in the first leg of the Confederation Cup’s final on Sunday, May 12 in Berkane, while the second leg will take place one week later on May 19 in Cairo.
