A section of a highway measuring 58.7 feet (18 meters) collapsed in Meizhou City, located in southern China’s Guangdong Province early Wednesday, causing 20 vehicles to plunge. At least 24 people died, while 30 others were injured, according to China’s News Agency, Xinhua.
The survivors are not at risk, according to media reports.
The reason for the fatal accident has not been disclosed by the local authorities; however, the area has recently experienced intense rainfall, leading to speculation that it was caused by natural disasters.
Around 500 emergency personnel were deployed for rescue and assistance missions following the incident.
Since last week, Guangdong, the most populous province in China, has been experiencing flash floods that caused four deaths and forced over 110,000 people to evacuate their homes. The floods left significant damage, in addition to school closures, flight cancellations, and missing people.
