Spanish Authorities–including maritime services of the Civil Guard, and Judicial Police–intercepted a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) off the coast of Gran Canaria of Moroccan origin carrying 2,345 kilograms of cannabis resin, and arrested two individuals, ages 26 and 36, according to Spain’s News Agency (EFE).
The operation unfolded thanks to the assistance of an integrated maritime/terrestrial unit. The location of the narco-boat was only possible thanks to collaboration with Morocco’s Territorial Surveillance Services (DGST), which warned of the boat’s arrival on the coast of Gran Canaria laden with drugs, the same source reported.
Maritime authorities revealed that the boat’s cargo contained 66 bales of the illicit substance resembling the ones commonly used for drug trafficking from Morocco to Spain. It tipped the scales at 2.345 kilograms.
The authorities seized the seven-meter boat, equipped with two outboard motors, a satellite phone, two GPS devices, and multiple mobile phones.
The suspects are now in police custody, pending further investigation under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office.
