Pedro Rocha has been appointed new president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) as announced in an official statement released on Friday. He had served as interim president since August.
Rocha’s appointment was made possible thanks to the support of a majority of the institution’s assembly, making him the sole candidate for the position. The elections, originally scheduled for May 6, were deemed unnecessary due to a lack of competing candidates.
The development coincides with the government’s decision to step into the Federation’s affairs, which are marked by a series of challenges and controversies, including the resignation of former President Luis Rubiales after kissing World Cup champion Jenni Hermoso.
In addition, the organization is facing a corruption investigation related to Rocha and Rubiales. The investigation is on some contractual discrepancies which came to light during Rubiales’ tenure, including the transfer of the Spanish Super Cup from Spain to Saudi Arabia.
