Morocco’s Minister of Interior Abdelouafi Laftit received his French counterpart Gérald Darmanin on Monday in Rabat to discuss several issues related to security and migration, and their inherent challenges. Other relevant members from each delegation took part in the meeting.
During their head-to-head conference, the two ministers reviewed issues of common interest to strengthen collaboration in line with King Mohammed VI’s and President Emmanuel Macron’s expectations and aspirations for an exceptionally strategic partnership based on friendship and mutual interest.
The two ministers praised the solid foundation laid by the security and migration components of this deep, multi-dimensional bilateral relationship, which has been fortified by open dialogue at all levels.
They expressed their shared vision of the regional and international scene, before highlighting the convergence of their points of view on security issues and common challenges, and agreeing to strengthen channels for exchanging expertise and information to better anticipate multiple threats–particularly those linked to criminal activities of terrorist groups and criminal networks–most notably in the Sahel-Saharan region, according to the statement.
The French Minister was receptive to Morocco’s strategy regarding security and migration challenges, adding that the latter is a factor in regional peace and stability, and elucidating that the Kingdom serves as a bulwark against various threats, as well as continuing to play a role as a reliable and credible partner on the international stage, particularly with respect to southern Mediterranean countries.
He also commended the Moroccan security forces for their operational and logistical cooperation throughout the preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Laftit recalled Morocco’s proper and comprehensive attitude to security concerns, notably the terrorist threat, as it employs a global policy which combines operational warfare and intelligence exchange with preventative measures–particularly against radicalization–as well as rehabilitative efforts.
He also noted the Kingdom’s comprehensive and humanistic approach to migration governance, which is consistent with the High Royal Orientations. In this regard, he underscored the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts and the beneficial role that it plays within the Permanent Joint Migration Group, which serves as the forum for conversation and cooperation on this topic.
After the meeting conclusion, the French minister shared his photo with his Moroccan counterpart, saying: “Thanks to my Moroccan counterpart Abdelouafi Laftit for action and cooperation between our two countries: security, fight against terrorism, civil security and help for the Olympic Games in Paris.”
