Head of Movement for Self-Determination of Kabylia (MAK) Ferhat Mehenni met with representatives from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar at the United Nations on Wednesday, reported La Revue Afrique on its telegram channel.
The representatives of the three Gulf States inquired MAK’s intentions, particularly with regard to the movement’s proposed declaration of independance.
One month ago, Mehenni had announced that Kabylia would proclaim the rebirth of the Kabyle state on April 20, 2024, in front of the UN’s New York headquarters, at the symbolically precise moment of 18:57 (6:57 P.M. Kabylia time), reflecting the year 1857 during which Kabylia lost its sovereignty following the battle of Icheriden.
The meeting caught eye of the Algerian Intelligence Services, in particular Major General Djebbar M’henna, who keeps a close watch on the activists, according to “Maroc Intelligence.”
Confirmation of the meetings between the MAK leader and representatives of the three Gulf States risks further damaging the already tense relations between Algiers and certain nations in the region.
