France will step up security around Jewish schools and synagogues, partly as a response to the current Israel-Iran crisis, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin tweeted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.
“As Passover approaches and given the current international situation, I have told local officials to significantly step up security at places visited by our Jewish compatriots, especially with regards to synagogues and Jewish schools,” he wrote.
Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles toward Israel on Saturday night in reaction to an Israeli strike on Iran’s embassy in Syria on April 1 which resulted in the death of seven Revolutionary Guard members, including two senior commanders.
Israel’s military said that it had detected more than 100 Iranian drones flying over Iraq at low speed and that it would take them hours to reach their targets.
Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the Iranian consulate attack. U.S. President Joe Biden, who cautioned Iran on Friday not to attack Israel, committed to support Israel in its fight against Iran.
However, Biden informed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the United States will not join in any Israeli counter-offensive against Iran, CNN and the Wall Street Journal reported.
