Rachid Talbi Alami of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), one of the three parties forming the Moroccan coalition government, was re-elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives (Lower House) for the remaining time of the current legislature, at a plenary session held on Friday to commemorate the commencement of the second session of the 2023-2024 legislative year.
Talbi Alami, the parliamentary majority’s nominee, earned 264 out of the 324 votes casted, compared to 23 for his only opponent Abdellah Bouanou, president of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) parliamentary grouping, which included 37 invalid ballots.
The Lower House Speaker was elected for the remainder of the parliamentary term (2021-2026) in accordance with the House’s rules of procedures, which state that the Speaker is elected at the start of legislation, then in the third year, during the April session, and for the remainder of the term, in accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution.
