Morocco’s national police (DGSN), in collaboration with Customs Services, successfully foiled an international drug trafficking attempt to smuggle 1,431 narcotics pills, on Wednesday evening, in Beni Ensar, located in northeast Morocco, according to security sources.
“Border control operations and thorough searches led to the apprehension of a 56-year-old Spanish citizen, immediately upon her arrival from Melilla,” the source reported, asserting that she had in her possession 1,431 Rivotril tablets.
Rivotril, also known as Clonazepam, is primarily used to treat seizures, panic attacks, and certain movement disorders. It is also illegally consumed as a recreational drug due to its sedative and euphoric effects, leading to misuse and addiction.
The suspect, who was allegedly “caught red-handed” while attempting to smuggle the drug, is now in custody pending further investigation under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office, which is looking at who may also be connected to the criminal activities, with an eye on regional and global links.
