Police in the M’Diq-Fnideq area in northern Morocco foiled the illegal immigration attempt of more than 200 sub-Saharan Africans at the border of the Spanish-occupied enclave of Sebta, at Oued Lakhloute in the early hours of Wednesday morning, according to security sources.
Some were carrying sticks, stones, and iron hooks to help them climb the metal fence that separates Morocco from the Spanish occupied territory.
Law enforcement reacted quickly and captured all the migrants. Some of the migrants and some law enforcement officers sustained minor injuries.
Morocco has become a major transit hub for migrants from a number of African nations, many of whom risk dangerous voyages in quest of better prospects in Europe. Some attempt to cross Morocco’s land border into the Spanish enclaves of Sebta and Melilla, while others set sail from Morocco to the Canary Islands or mainland Europe.
