Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed the kingdom’s three steadfast constants on the Sahara issue to the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, according to a Ministry statement.
The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the UN, Ambassador Omar Hilale joined the meeting, held in Rabat, on Thursday.
During the deliberations, held in a “candid and constructive atmosphere,” according to the statement, Foreign Minister Bourita reiterated the imperative for attaining a “realistic, pragmatic, lasting, and compromise-based political resolution.”
He affirmed that such a resolution must adhere to a three-pronged framework of roundtable discussions as defined by the United Nations, full participation by Algeria, and a focus on Morocco’s Initiative for Autonomy as the basis for any resolution. He also made clear that any meaningful progress must be contingent upon halting the daily ceasefire violations committed by the Polisario militias.
De Mistura’s visit is part of a regional tour to the UN Security Council Resolution 2703-related parties to revitalize the political process through roundtable discussions. These include Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario.
