King Mohammed VI was the only Head of State outside the sub-region to have received an invitation to take part in the swearing-in and inauguration ceremony of President-Elect of the Republic of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, which is scheduled to take place today in Diamniadio, near Dakar.
A delegation composed of senior officials is representing the King at the ceremony. The invitation testifies to the depth of the exceptional, multi-dimensional partnership between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Senegal in the political, economic, cultural, social and spiritual realms.
The swearing-in and investiture ceremony of Senegal’s new president commands the presence of various heads-of-state and chairmen of the commissions of the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU).
Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who emerged victorious in the first round of the March 24 presidential election with 54.28% of the vote–well ahead of candidate Amadou Ba (35.79%)–is Senegal’s fifth president since the country gained independence in 1960.
