Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch met with the members of the Family Law (Mudawana) Review Committee on Saturday, and received their amendment proposals which will be submitted to King Mohammed VI.
The Monarch had called in his Throne Day speech for revising the Mudawana (laws governing family and marriage matters) in a way to empower and support women within the limit of Islamic Sharia law.
Akhannouch told the press that he met with the committee members after completing their mission within the set deadlines (six months). He added that the committee coordinator had provided him with a report detailing the suggested amendments to the said Family Law.
The Head of Government noted that the committee had been operating through an inclusive participatory approach, holding hearings with various stakeholders from civil society organizations involved in women’s issue, children’s rights, human rights, political parties, trade unions, judges, actors, researchers, academics, as well as ministries and departments.
He stated that the committee had also received memorandums via email.
After submitting the amendments to the Palace for review, the government will subsequently prepare a bill to submit to Parliament for approval.
