Morocco has allocated 80 Mln MAD to restore a number of Zawias, mausoleums and historic buildings in Morocco by 2024, said Minister of Endowment and Islamic Affairs Ahmed Taoufiq at a meeting of the Islamic and Foreign Affairs commission at the House of Representatives this week.
The significant budget allocation reflects the importance Morocco attaches to historic monuments in the country.
The Minister stressed the vital role of Zawias in promoting religious culture and reinforcing Moroccan values.
He also highlighted the Ministry’s work in monitoring the activities of these spiritual institutions, which are essential to the preservation of spiritual security in Morocco.
The Kingdom of Morocco is home to 1,650 zawiya, 5,703 mausoleums, and 33 zawiya-mausoleums, each playing a unique role in Morocco’s social and spiritual fabric.
Restoration projects include the refurbishment of the Moulay Ali Bougaleb mausoleum in Ksar El Kebir, the refurbishment of the Sidi Benaâcher mausoleum in Salé, and the restoration of the Moulay Thami mausoleum and its annexes in Ouazzane.
In addition to safeguarding Morocco’s heritage, these initiatives aim to strengthen citizens’ connection with their rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
