Chinese company Gotion High-Tech plans to build a new electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant in the Atlantic Free Zone located in the city of Kenitra instead of Bouknadel in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, several local media reported.
Gotion High-Tech chose the new site to be closer to potential customers. The factory will be near the manufacturing unit of the automotive manufacturer Stellantis.
The Chinese group also opted to set up in the Atlantic Free Zone to take advantage of the future Kenitra Atlantique port, set to be operational by 2030.
German automaker Volkswagen will hold a 40% stake in Gotion High-Tech’s future Moroccan subsidiary. This gigafactory is expected to cost 65 billion MAD, making it the largest foreign industrial investment in Morocco after Renault’s in Tanger.
On May 31 last year, the Chinese giant signed a memorandum of understanding with the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development (AMDIE) for the construction of an electric vehicle battery plant. The first phase of this plant is expected to be operational by the second half of 2026.
Gotion High-Tech researches, develops, manufactures, and markets lithium batteries, principally lithium-ion batteries, power lithium battery sets, and other related products. Its products are used in electric commercial vehicles, passenger cars, power stations, and other areas.
